Dr. Velan is the recipient of the distinguished Excellent Service Award bestowed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the medical field. He further elevated his expertise by completing a comprehensive Hepatobiliary (HPB) Fellowship at the esteemed Selayang Hospital, an institution renowned for its dedication to advancing medical knowledge especially in liver diseases. This fellowship experience granted Dr. Velan a unique opportunity to delve into the intricacies of Hepatobiliary Surgery, refine his skills in liver resection, pancreatic and bile duct surgeries, and endoscopic procedures, especially ERCP.

Before joining Bukit Tinggi Medical Centre (BTMC), Dr. Velan had an illustrious career marked by impactful contributions as a consultant at prestigious healthcare institutions both locally, including Hospital Selayang and Hospital Alor Star, and internationally, at the esteemed Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Proficient in various critical procedures, he is skilled in laparoscopic and open procedures, ranging from hepatobiliary procedures to general surgical operations. He is also proficient in endoscopic procedures like OGDS, colonoscopy and ERCP.

Dr. Velan's academic journey commenced with his pursuit of an MBBS degree from the prestigious Manipal Academy of Higher Education(MAHE), India. He furthered his education with notable post-graduate achievements, acquiring a Masters in Surgery from UKM and undertaking fellowships in Hepatobiliary Surgery under Malaysia's Ministry of Health and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, UK.

Besides, he holds esteemed memberships in prominent medical associations such as the Malaysian Medical Association, the Malaysian Society of Transplant, the International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association( IHPBA) and the Malaysian HPB Society.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Velan is a dedicated researcher and contributor to medical literature. His publications span a breadth of subjects, ranging from comparative studies like the randomised control trial on colonoscopy prep methods, to insightful analyses of procedures such as chemoport insertion techniques. Notably, his research extends to innovative areas, such as the thought-provoking "Endoscopic Treatment of pancreatic Ascites: Judgement between risk and benefit" presented in 2019. These contributions underscore Dr. Velan's commitment to advancing medical knowledge and refining healthcare practices.
