Cardiologists uncover condition that is symptomatic of advanced heart failure
A condition called bendopnea has been defined as a new symptom of advanced heart failure by cardiologists at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the US. According to their findings – published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Heart Failure in February – experiencing shortness of breath while bending over, such as when tying shoelaces, may point to excessive fluid retention in patients with heart failure.
The cardiologists found that one-third of 102 patients referred for cardiac catheterisation had bendopnea. They first measured the pressure within the heart and how well it was pumping blood to the body of these patients. Then the measurements were repeated with 65 patients after they had sat in a chair for two minutes and bent over for one. The cardiologists discovered that patients with bendopnea had too much fluid in their bodies, causing elevated pressure. The pressure in their body increased when they bent forward.
Heart failure is regarded as advanced when conventional heart therapies and symptom management are ineffective. The presence of bendopnea may be a non-invasive way to assess possible worsening states of heart health, and the fact that it may be necessary to adjust the patient’s current heart-failure treatment.
