The world’s smallest hearing aid

The affordable, discreet Nanoplug is smaller than a coffee bean

The world’s smallest hearing aid

The Nanoplug – a hearing aid that is roughly 7mm in length and nearly invisible to others, has started production, following a hugely successful Indiegogo crowd funding campaign, says manufacturer US Photonics.

The advantage of Nanoplug’s small size, the company says, becomes apparent once it is in use – as the device doesn’t completely fill the ear canal, wearers can easily determine the distance and direction of a sound of interest.

Hearing aids have become highly advanced in recent years. Audio processing algorithms, miniaturisation, and wireless capabilities are now common features. However, the conspicuousness of devices remains a problem, considering the social stigma that still surrounds hearing aid wearers.

Unlike most hearing aids, the Nanoplug features a built-in “nanobattery” that is designed to be much smaller than other hearing aids. The battery can be charged fairly quickly and allows for up to six days of use before the next charge.

Priced at US$400, the device has the potential to shake up the industry in several ways, according to MedGadget. According to the AARP website, custom hearing aids can cost anywhere between US$2,200 and $7,000.

“In the 21st century, hearing aids shouldn’t cost $2,000, come in antiquated designs, or be tedious to obtain,” the device’s creator, Nevena Zivic, told Digital Trends.

A lifetime user of hearing aids, Zivic hopes “to make them fun and desirable, while removing the pain of acquiring them,” reported Digital Trends.
