Various general surgical procedures for benign and malignant diseases. He also perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies both for upper and lower GI tract. His extensive work in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) has made him an expert in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant conditions of thyroid, hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating), esophagus, stomach, GERD, hiatus hernia, spleen, gall bladder, small bowel, colorectal, bariatric and hernias (groin and abdominal wall – single, recurrent and complex). Over the years, he has accumulated a vast experience in the area of minimally invasive surgery and as teaching and sharing of knowledge is his passion, he has trained many surgeons (both locally and internationally) in the area of various minimally invasive surgery (especially hernia, colorectal, upper GI, bariatric and thyroid). Many of the surgeons he trained have gone on to become great minimally invasive surgeons.
Dr. Vimal K. Vasudeavan
Consultant General & Bariatric Surgeon
Mr Vimal is a small town boy from Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. He completed his MBBS degree from Karnatak University, Dharwad, India in 1991. He subsequently completed Masters in General Surgery from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) in the year 2000. Upon completing his gazettement as a general surgeon, he was transferred to the department of surgery Hospital Taiping where he served from 2001 – 2009. Mr Vimal was the head of department of surgery at Hospital Taiping from 2002 – 2009. It was during that time that he took a keen interest in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy). He obtained a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy from India (FMAS) in 2007 and later in France (2007).
In the year 2009, he left government service and joined Gleneagles Hospital Penang as a resident consultant general and minimally invasive surgeon. In his capacity as president of SELSMA and MHS he has organized many congresses at national and international levels. The highlight, being the congress president for ELSA 2018 in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. During his government service, he was awarded the excellence service award twice.
Mr Vimal is an avid researcher and has published numerous articles in local and international journals. Recently he co-authored the consensus for obesity surgery in Malaysia. He has also given extensive invited lectures, spoken at panel discussions and participated actively in continued professional development activities. Together with Mr Kiru he is the co-founder of Penang Weight Loss Clinic & Surgery, which specializes in the Multidisciplinary Team approach for managing people living with obesity (PLWO) and their medical conditions. He is happily married with two wonderful children and he is a passionate supporter of Liverpool football club (YNWA). Recently, Mr Vimal has picked up an interest in everything related to coffee. His motto in life is “work hard and play harder”.
