Carrying your phone in your trouser pocket may compromise potency
Researchers at the University of Exeter have suggested that exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) may be detrimental to male fertility.
A series of studies led by Dr Fiona Mathews, program director for biosciences and animal behaviour at Exeter, pooled together data from 1,500 semen samples obtained from men attending fertility clinics and research centres. The studies measured exposure to cell phone RF-EMR.
Sperm from control groups showed 50-85 percent motility, however, motility fell by an average of 8 percent where there had been exposure to cell phone radiation. Similar effects were visible for sperm viability; however, the results for sperm concentration were less clear. Nevertheless, the findings strongly suggest that carrying cell phones in trouser pockets adversely affects sperm quality.
In the long run, researchers say a larger-scale trial involving standardised levels and periods of exposure is needed to assess the importance of mobile phone exposure to public health.
