Research shows added benefits of an old-world diet to kidney function

Eating well for kidney health, Mediterranean style

We’ve all heard about the protective effects of a Mediterranean diet on a variety of health outcomes. Now, scientists have found that adhering to a Mediterranean-style diet also works wonders for patients with kidney disease, significantly reducing their risk of further decline of kidney function.

The results of the observational community-based prospective study, which were published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), were obtained from an analysis of 900 participants who were followed over a period of seven years.

Researchers correlated participants’ adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet, which is heavy in fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes, and heart-healthy fats as compared to processed foods, sweets and red meat, to the effect it had on long-term kidney function. The study found that those who adhered more to the diet had a 50 percent lower chance of developing chronic kidney disease, and a 42 percent lower risk of experiencing rapid kidney function decline.

Experts further note that a Mediterranean-style diet is only one part of a healthy lifestyle, and that regular exercise is also needed to maintain physical health.
