Functional training involves exercises that condition your muscles to help you make everyday activities like carrying groceries and climbing a flight of stairs more manageable while reducing your risk of injury.
The critical component of functional training is simply moving; more specifically, moving in numerous directions at several different speeds and using a wide variety of equipment to engage every muscle in the body. Functional training generally consists of compound exercises like squats, lunges, and deadlifts. Compound exercises require more than one muscle to work together; that means moving forward, backward, side to side, and incorporating rotational movements.
By training your multiple muscle groups simultaneously, you are helping your body function better as one. You are training your body to act like a system, not just individual parts that work independently. This, in turn, trains both your mind and muscles to work together, keeping you safe doing your daily activities.
Functional training can help every person regardless of fitness level, age, exercise experience, or time availability for training. Whether you are an athlete or someone who’s just searching for new exercise programs to enhance your quality of life, it is a good idea to schedule sessions with a physical therapist to learn proper functional training techniques.
