Malaysia – The World’s Healthcare Marvel

February 16, 2022

From being known as the Hidden Jewel of Asia to The World’s Healthcare Marvel, Malaysia has built a strong reputation as a safe and trusted leading global destination for healthcare travel over the past ten years. The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) is a government agency under the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) entrusted to facilitate and grow Malaysia’s healthcare travel industry under the brand ‘Malaysia Healthcare’.

Malaysia – The World’s Healthcare Marvel

Since its establishment in 2009, MHTC has aggressively promoted the brand globally, earning Malaysia a reputation as the ‘Hidden Jewel of Asia’ for healthcare. The brand has since grown and today, Malaysia is positioned as the ‘World’s Healthcare Marvel’, owing to our burgeoning reputation as a leading destination for healthcare travel. From 2011 to 2019, healthcare traveller arrivals to Malaysia increased by 90% and in 2019, Malaysia’s healthcare travel revenue stood at RM1.7 billion, with a CAGR of 17% between 2015-2019, showing the potential that Malaysia holds as a leader in the global healthcare travel industry.

MHTC has worked to streamline industry players and service providers into a more focused development strategy to raise Malaysia’s profile in healthcare travel on an international stage. Malaysia Healthcare’s foundations are strongly built upon public-private partnerships, namely between ministries, government agencies and private healthcare facilities, third party administrators, airlines, travel agents, health facilitators, and other relevant industry players.

The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Experience

Malaysia’s healthcare travel industry is strictly monitored and stringently regulated by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). The growth and progress of the industry is chiefly attributed to Malaysia Healthcare’s proposition of world-class quality, ease of accessibility, and competitive affordability. Malaysia’s position as a favourable healthcare destination is also accentuated through seamless end-to-end services dedicated to patient safety and peace of mind. Malaysia’s strategic position as a Muslim-friendly nation, warm hospitality, and tourism attractions are other factors that add to our appeal as a healthcare travel destination.

Global Recognition

Testament to Malaysia’s rise as a leading healthcare travel destination is the many accolades awarded to the country on the international stage.

  • International Medical Travel Journal Awards (2015 to 2020)
    • Health and Medical Tourism: Destination of the Year – Malaysia (2017 and 2020)
    • Health and Medical Tourism: Cluster of the Year – Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (2017 to 2020)
  • Best Country in the World for Healthcare (2015 to 2019) by International Living
  • Top Asian Country for Retirement (2018 to 2021) by International Living

Seamless End-to-End Services

Malaysia Healthcare’s end-to-end patient service is an excellent model of successful public-private partnerships, consisting of an ecosystem to prioritise patient experience. Together with our partners and stakeholders, we have cultivated a seamless journey for our healthcare travellers – from pre-departure, to point of arrival, and even after a patient returns home, with the assurance that healthcare travellers receive quality care for their peace of mind.
